Abstract

Trafficability in the Arctic Ocean in summer: experience gained from a North Pole voyage A.L. Tunik American Bureau of Shipping, 2 WTC, 106th Floor, ABSTRACT Studies of the ice environment and ship performance during a North Pole voyage aboard the Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker ROSSIA are presented. The ice environmental study included hourly measurements of ice thicknesses using photography of ice fragments broken out by the icebreaker and visual estimates of ice concentrations in the vicinity of the ship. The route-specific data are compared with the general ice thickness distributions which have been acquired for decades from many submarine crossings. The route-specific data are directly applicable for ship design and navigation analysis. The ship performance was analyzed statistically on the basis of ship progress data recorded hourly and a diagram of ice propulsion capability of the ROSSIA in the summer Arctic ice of various thicknesses has been plotted.
