Abstract

An integrated and structured method for teaching systems analysis and design, making use of a generalised methodology was developed, and has been used successfully during the last two years at the Cambridge campus of Anglia Polytechnic University (APU). The course scheme is based on termly modules, with large groups of mixed ability students typically entering the University with no prior knowledge of software engineering. Using the method described, each student progresses from basic tools and techniques through several levels of expertise. Periods of academic study are alternated with practical application in order to consolidate the theoretical concepts. Other modules are able to move forward, in parallel to this process, and build on these central concepts whilst
