Abstract

Over the past 40 years technological advances in the fields of information and communications technology have allowed for the creation of new digital media as a vehicle for human expression, communication and behaviour. These new media are neither better nor worse than the more traditional methods of communication but they do have several differences which raise fundamental questions about how they impact the lives of all who use them whether it be for commercial, entertainment or creative purposes. This paper discusses how the topics of security and privacy underpin all aspects of these new digital media and how psychology can provide a deeper understanding of these problems with the goal of trying to understand ourselves and the challenges the new digital medium provides.
