Abstract

Explicit finite element modelling of ballistic impact on thermoplastic fibre composite armour S.H. Madsen" & A.J. Based on numerical studies, guidelines are given for the geometrical modelling of the armour. Two approaches to modelling of failure induced by ballistic impact in thermoplastic fiber compos- ites are presented. The failure models have been implemented in the LS-Dyna- 3D code as user subroutines. Preliminary numerical and experimental results are shown and compared with the Chang-Chang-model. Strain-rate effects are discussed. The work is performed in a project under a European Research Pro- gramme that runs four years and has a budget of 10 mil ECU. INTRODUCTION Numerical modelling of
