Abstract

Response of clamped single and double stiffened rectangular plates subjected to blast loads G.N. Nurick & A.G. Conolly Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Cape Town, P.B. Rondebosch, 7700, South Africa ABSTRACT Preliminary experimental results for clamped stiffened rectangular plates subjected to impulsive loads are presented. The plates are both single and double stiffened across the plate width. Beams with width 8mm and thickness 4mm and 5mm were clamped against a 1,6mm thick rectangular plate with dimensions 113mm by 70mm. INTRODUCTION While extensive investigations have been reported on plates and on beams subjected to impulsive loads (see for example Jones [1-3] and Nurick et al [4- 6]), results on stiffened plates are limited. Recent contributions include Houlston and co-authors [7,8] who report on full scale test results, while Nurick, et al [9] describe numerical and experimental results on fully built-in stiffened square
