The use of computers in vehicles for distinct reasons is becoming more common every day. This article presents a Monitoring System designed by a group of investigators at "Universidad del Pa is Vasco" for the Basque Country Railway Company, Eusko Trenbideak/Ferrocarriles Vascos (ET/FV). The system which has been designed is knowledge-based and gives high speed results. 1 Introduction The fundamental use of the designed Monitoring System is the detection and diagnosis of faults. The elements which constitute the onboard system can be seen in figure 1: - Electric signal conditioning cards: On/Off, analogues, periodics, width modulation, etc. - Communication cards for transmitting information, collected by the sensors, to the onboard computers. - Specific computers f
