Olsen ABB Signal a/s, Denmark ABSTRACT A key question addressed by today's railway management is how to improve the profitability and quality of rail services, given the constraint of immense investments already laid down in infrastructure installations and rolling stock. For many railroads the ownership of Train Operations and Infrastructure may in the future be separated. This fact implies special requirements to the Traffic Management Systems. There is no doubt that it is a desire for the European Commission to liberalise train operations to a multitude of operating companies. This makes it essential to standardise as defined under EURET/ETCS and makes it probable that definitions of standards will be a long term sub- ject.
