Abstract

Welding is an operation with a complex character involving a multitude of physical phenomena which are mostly extremely non-linear and transient. Today's commercial multi-purpose programs provide powerful tools for the simulation of transport problems. However, their general models cannot cover all essential physical effects, especially those occurring in the domain of the molten pool. A promising way to overcome this situation is the implementation of specialised micro-models in existing codes. With that the field of application of both micro- and macro-model can be widened. This paper is focused on the coupling of specialised models for the region around a concentrated moving heat source with a code for the prediction of the effects occurring in the base metal.
