Betrouni^ Constructions Rue d'Eragny, 95031 Neuville sur Oise, France. ^Laboratoire de Mecanique des Fluides, Institut de physique, U.S. T.H.B, Abstract This work deals with unsteady laminar double-diffusive convection in a rectangular cavity. The enclosure is heated along one vertical wall and cooled along the other. Solutal gradient is imposed either horizontally or vertically. Under high N value a strong stratified fluid and diffusive solution is obtained. The objective of the work is to identify the flow regime from thermal to solutal dominated flows and to compare the solutions issued from the two considered applied boundary conditions. The flow structure in the transitional domain, from a thermal-dominated situation to a compositional-dominated, depend on the initial conditions. Flow hysteresis effect is observed and
