Abstract

Reservoir thermal modeling using CE-QUAL- W2 T.M. Cole US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Waterways Experiment Station, United States Abstract CE-QUAL-W2 is a two-dimensional, longitudinal/vertical hydrodynamic and water quality model that has been applied to over 200 rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries during the last two decades. Results for 68 reservoir temperature simulations in the US and throughout the world using CE-QUAL-W2 are summarized. The simulations cover a total of 144 calibration years. The reservoirs encompass a variety of residence times, terrains, and reservoir operational procedures including navigation, irrigation, peaking-hydropower, water supply, and once-through cooling facilities. Results show that the model is capable of reproducing a variety of reservoir thermal regimes with minimum adjustment of hydrodynamic/temperature calibration parameters. The only parameter adjusted for these reservoirs was the wind-sheltering coeffi
