Abstract

Groundwater contamination was recently encountered near the Danube river. There is evidence that an accidental input of pollutants in that area occurred some years ago. By simulating groundwater flow and solute transport with the computer model MOC - Method Of Characteristics - the spread of the contami- nation plume was evaluated. For our application the program had to be ex- tended to approximate unconfmed flow and time-dependent boundary condi- tions. With reasonable assumptions and inverse modeling of the unknown pa- rameters of the scenario of the accident estimated with the extended MOC, agreement was achieved between the simulation and the observed concentration distribution. 1 Introduction A routine measurement in a water-supp
