Abstract

Application of chemometric techniques to the examination of marine physical chemical data of Eolian Islands and Northern Sicily M. Mecozzi, L. Salvatori Institute Centraleper la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica Applicata al Mare, via L. Respighi n. 5, 00197 Rome, Italy ABSTRACT The application of chemometric techniques, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) to the elaboration of physical chemical parameters of seawater around Eolian Islands and along the northern coast of Sicily, between Palermo and Messina, allows to get complete knowledge of the hydrological characteristics of the examined area. Actually, by means of the multivariate graphical approach it is possible to reveal all the hydrological characteristics, such as water mixing, thermoaline structures and correlation of parameters not normally attainable by the traditional univariate techniques.
