Abstract

It is exposed a practical procedure to determine the residence time in coastal lagoons where the river flow is absent. Because much of the transport of water within these lagoons is due to turbulence processes, the residence time is therefore formulated in stocastic basis, i.e., probability density function of the water parcel leaving the system. Such definition provides a tool to estimate residence times by numerical simulation of dye dispersion. The procedure to determine the residence time is illustrated through a case studied. 1 Introduction Many practical problems concerning the management of coastal lagoons require to know the flushing time of the lagoons. Flushing time scales have usual
