Abstract

This paper presents a stochastic model to forecast delays on a section in a railway network. For this model, a simple algorithm is derived to calculate delay distributions, both for transient and stationary (equilibrium) behaviour. In an application to a railway section of the Dutch railway net- work, we show how the algorithm can help to improve the quality of the timetable.
