Abstract

The paper presents an overview of the railway transport evolution from the point of view of the market approach. The status of liberalisation of the railways is shortly examined to put in evidence as the European railway are evolving and the needs of railway companies to operate in an open railway market. The certification of the safety and the adoption of new technologies are presented as a really relevant tool to operate in an open market from both points of view of quality enhancement and cost reduction.
