Abstract

The penetration and perforation behaviour of AISI 4340 high strength alloy steel subjected to projectile impact are analyzed with finite element method and simulated with FE analytic software DYNA3D. When simulated, AISI 4340 thin plate is impacted by tungsten sinter alloy hemispherically-tipped projectiles in oblique conditions with the angles of incidence changing from 30°, 45° to 60°. In each incident angle, the impact velocity varies from 0.5 km/s, 1.0 km/s, 1.5km/s to 2.0km/s. From the results, we find that both the velocity and angle have obvious effects on plate deformation and perforation behaviour and that at the impact velocity of 0.5km/s, the projectile embeds and ricochets according to the obliquity. Also, when v
