Abstract

In this paper the necessary fundamental solutions for thick plates resting on a two-parameter foundation are derived. An application that of a clamped thick plate resting on an elastic foundation is considered to demonstrate the accuracy of the present formulation. 1. Introduction Thick foundation plates are important in civil engineering applications, such as building foundations and road pavements. Usually, thin plate theory [1] is used to model the structural behaviour of such foundations. However, for an accurate representation of the stresses, a more sophisticated plate bending model is essen- tial. Reissner [2] developed a higher order plate bending theory which accounts for shear deformations; and
