Abstract

Some aspects of the ill-posedness of the inverse problem of parameter identifica- tion in groundwater flow are described. The hydraulic parameters are obtained from head observations through a calibration procedure coupling the dual reci- procity boundary element method and the maximum likelihood principle. The quasi-Newton method is used for the solution of the non-linear optimization prob- lem. Sample results show the non-identifiability of the problem in some cases when no additional prior information is taken into account. Introduction The inverse problem of parameter identification has been studied extensively dur- ing the last two decades [1]. The problem concerns the optimal de
