Barrera Department of Chemical Engineering, CETS Institut Quimic de Sarrid (Universitat Ramon LLull) 08017 Barcelona, Spain ABSTRACT Six expert systems have been developed in the Chemical Engineering Department of C.E.T.S. Institut Quimic de Sarria, Universitat Ramon Llull, (Barcelona, Spain) in collaboration with the refinery which BP Oil, Spain, S.A., owns in Castelldn de la Plana (Spain). The programs deal with the following topics related to the safety area of the refinery: consequence analysis, training and planning of operation procedures. The programs have been developed on anIBMPS/2 model 80 and IBM PC 386 microcomputers with the shell Guru*, release 3.0, of Micro Data Base Systems, Inc. and Microsoft.
