Abstract The hydrological information concerning river basins are essential in numerous and diversified activities. The range of the use of hydrological data, mainly those related to rainfall, the height of water-levels and flow, concern in particular manner fundamental aspects of the management of the river basins. Each single activity requires suitable systems of storing, processing and fiuition which prove to be completely different for each one as far as functionality, performance, reliability and use are concerned. This paper presents three different technologies: Data Base, Data Warehouse and XML repository, considered by the Italian National Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service the most suitable for the storing, processing and fruition of the hydrological data in each of the afore mentioned spheres.
