Abstract The exploitation of natural gas and petroleum in the River Urucu Basin, municipality of Coari (Amazonas - Brazil), by Petrobras, a state-owned company, responsible for extraction of fossil fuel in Brazil, resulted in a transportation river system of natural gas and petroleum through Rivers Solim6es and Negro, from Coari down to Manaus, with inherent potential risks to the environment.
