Abstract

A wastewater treatment plant with the reed-bed technology P. Anagnostopoulos*, V. Avgitidis*, E. Madytos/Modi wastewater treatment plant is described herein. The plant employs the reed-bed technology and serves 2,500 inhabitants, being in operation since June 1995. The basic characteristic of the technology is the mild treatment of wastewater in beds planted with special plants. The treatment is performed biologically with the aid of microorganisms developed around the rhizomes of the reeds. The technology minimizes the need for electro-mechanical equipment, and since the plant operation is simple without any complicated manipulations, there is no requirement for highly qualified operational personnel, resulting in very low operational costs. The six-year operati
