Abstract

Local scour countermeasure around bridge piers U.Y. Kim, H.Park & K.H. Yoo Department of Civil Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science Abstract This study based on laboratory work, analyzes factors affecting local scour in order to understand the various characteristics of the local scour surrounding bridge piers. With scour countermeasure devices attached as a method for decreasing local scour, the study carried out the laboratory experiments and calculated the scour depth. From the experiments with the devices attached, it seems it is possible to reduce the scour depth. The paper presents the following results: the scour depth increases in order of protecting column, protecting plate, sacrificial piles and non-protecting facilities. However, it shows no meaningful difference between protecting column and protecting plate. 1. Introduction Countermeasures for bridge scour are measures incorporated into a highway- stream crossing system to monitor, control, inhibit, change,
