Abstract

Air quality control and emission abatement in regional scale P. Holnicki Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences, 01-44*7 Warszawa, Newelska 6, Poland INTRODUCTION The problem of sulfur and nitrogen oxides emissions is particularly severe in Central-East Europe, where high level of concentration and deposition have already led to serious ecological damage [1,5]. Poland is one of the most polluted areas in that region. Air quality degradation is, first of all, due to sulfur oxides, emitted by a number of power and heating plants, industrial and domestic sources, transportation system. The most significant environ- mental damage is caused by the energy sector, since the dominating source of electricity production is coal (hard coal and lignite) combustion. The mo- dernization of this sector and emission reduction is one of the fundamental problems considered nowadays. Regional scale abatement strategy depends on the criterium upon which the environment
