Abstract

The present work is a study of a tertiary treatment for the final effluent of the treatment plant for the leachates generated in the Central Sanitary Landfill of Asturias (COGERSA). The method employed in this plant consists of a pressurised aerobic process, followed by ultrafiltration. By means of this treatment, the biodegradable organic matter and the ammoniacal nitrogen are almost completely eliminated, obtaining values of BOD$ and N-NH/ of less than 30 mg/1 and 5 mg/1, respectively. However, the leachates contain a large amount of refractory organic matter, which is not eliminated by biological treatment Adsorption studies were carried out on granular active carbon (GAC) and on resins with the aim of eliminating these compounds. These studies w
