Abstract

Machine learning tools (ML), developed within the area of artificial intelligence (AI), are able to analyse a data base (perform data mining), using also some domain (expert) knowledge As a result, ML tools can automatically, or with limited expert help, induce compact and easy to understand models from measured data The paper briefly describes the ML tools M5 and FORS that induce knowledge from measured data in the form of regression trees and Prolog programs, respectively. It then describes their successful application to the system identification and subsequent prediction of algal growth in the Lake of Bled, Slovenia. The
