Abstract

Modelling of sediment dynamics in the harbour area of Bremen M. Lobmeyr, J. Kappenberg, I. Grabemann Institut fur Physik, GKSS Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH, Max Planck Strasse, 2054 Geesthacht, Germany ABSTRACT Sediment dynamics in the Bremen harbour area (Weser estuary) are ex- amined under different discharge conditions using a two-dimensional nu- merical model. During periods of mean discharge riverine material accu- mulates in the harbour, while during periods of high discharge it is flushed through the area. This is caused by the shifting of the flood current limit in the harbour area. INTRODUCTION In order to understand the processes of spreading and transport of pol- lutants in rivers and estuaries it is important to know the dynamic be- haviour of their carriers, i.e. water and suspended particulate matter. Suspended matter is generally acknowledged to be the most important carrier for a large class of pollutants, especially anthropogeneous heavy metals (Wilken et
