Abstract

Seawater intrusion in submarine karst channel of rectangular cross-section V. Dermissis Department of Civil Engineering, Division of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 540 06 Thessaloniki, Greece ABSTRACT The length of seawater intrusion, in submarine karst channel of rectangular cross-section, is studied on the basis of Schijf and Schoenfeld's [9] model. The channel is assumed connecting the sea with the coastal karst freshwater aquifer. The derived differential equation for the dimensionless length of the wedge has been analyticaly solved. This analytical model is also given in graphic form suitable for practical applications. INTRODUCTION For many coastal karst regions, the karst freshwater resources are sometimes the only water resources for municipal, agricultural, and industrial uses. Therefore, the development, control, and conservation of these resources are of great importance. The exploitation of karst aq
