Abstract

Modelling of salt distribution in the Tejo estuary using the QUICK scheme L.I. Portela, R. Neves Department of Mechanical Engineering, Instituto Superior Tecnico, P-1096 Lisboa Codex, Portugal ABSTRACT A two-dimensional depth integrated transport model is applied to the simulation of salinity distribution in the Tejo estuary (Portugal). The high-order QUICK scheme is used for the space discretization of the advection terms. The accuracy of the model is tested by comparison with field data from routine sampling and from continuous recordings. The results show that the model is capable of describing the distribution of salinity reasonably well (absolute error smaller than 1.0 in 50% of the stations). It is argued that accurate modelling of salinity intrusion and of steep salinity gradients mainly requires: (1) a thorough representation of the bathymetry, and (2) numerical methods for advection with low artificial diffusion. INTRODUCTION Salinity is one of the most important
