Abstract

This paper investigates the prediction of severe lightning discharges that might cause a serious traffic disturbance, by using computers based on the Japanese Lightning Detection Network (JLDN), in order to support dispatchers to make an effective decision about arranging maintenance engineers, emergency electrical power generators and extra electrical devices for quick recovery. A real-time Lightning Hazard Prediction (LHP) system is proposed. Two principal estimation techniques are evaluated by applying them to the real lightning data. Keywords: lightning, lightning detection, lightning prediction. 1 Introduction In recent years, a lot of electronic devices have been installed in signal and telecommunication systems such as electronic interlocking devices, electronic level-crossing controllers,
