Abstract

Inertia is a key fact in vehicle design; however estimations and assumptions are not easy to formulate in order to achieve a reliable analysis. This paper uses Algor's Mechanical Event Simulator to improve the crash safety and reduce the weight of an electric car using time dependant finite element analysis. The analysis is applied to a SAE formula electric competition car. This car needs a light, aerodynamic and collision safe structure that meets SAE standards to compete in the Electraton series. The analysis includes failure, non linear deformation to prevent any dangerous bend and build a safer car with an optimal performance. The solid structure is first modeled in the Mechanical Desktop CAD software and then it is automatically exported to the Mesh Engine by Algor, where the rest of the parameters are set. The results obtained fr
