Abstract The study of the behaviow: of construction materials and elements with regard to moisture is extremely important for the planning of its execution, especially concerning durability, tightness and decay of aspect. The problem of moisture in buildings has always roused a great deal of interest. However, due to the complexity of the phenomenon it is often very difficult to give a scientific explanation of what causes it. It is important to note that most Portuguese historical constructions present problems of rising damp that brings over not only the covering degradation, the unpleasant aspect that comes from the presence of fungi and moss on the walls, but also the excessively wet environment so prejudicial to health.
