Abstract

Some numerical models of a multiple-leaf arch-tympanum are presented. This bearing structure is typical of some Rornanesque basilicas in Northern Lombardy. Its carrying capacity depends mainly on the mechanical behaviour of the joint between the two masonry layers of the multiple-leaf arch, and in part also on the connection between the arch and the weak masonry of the tympanum. Displacements at the ground and at the buttresses that resist the horizontal thrust can cause loss of connection and even local separation between the different layers of the arches, close to the keystone. The response of the model is studied taking into account two different behaviours of the intermediate mortar layer: Coulomb friction behaviour and no tangential stress transfer. The global security of the structural element is investigated also by m
