Abstract

SKAI: a knowledge based environment for scheduling traction equipment and personnel K. Van Marcke & B. Tubbax Knowledge Technologies n.v., Spaarstraat 29, B-1000 Brussels ABSTRACT The paper presents SKAI, a knowledge based system to schedule traction equipment and train personnel developed for the Belgian railway company SNCB. The system uses its encoded expert knowledge to support the human scheduler not only on the side-activities of the scheduling task but also on the really central problem solving aspects. SKAI's basic schedule component is fully operational, installed, and used by over twenty experts on a daily basis since July 1993. It reduces the time required to build the basic schedule with about 75%.
