Identification of dynamic soil resistance to piles with consideration of system uncertainties T. Muto Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Science University of Tokyo, Japan Abstract In seismic design of pile foundation, it is necessary to evaluate properly dynamic soil resistance to plies during severe earthquakes. However, the nonlinear charac- teristics of the soil resistance to piles have not been cleared well. A method to estimate the soil resistance to a pile by using the measurement data of the bending strains along the pile and the displacement response at the pile head is developed in this paper. The flexural rigidities of the pile are not required to be a priori. Therefore the estimation method consists of two stages. At the first stage, the rigidities of pile are determined with the use of the relation between the bending strains along the pile and the displacement at pile head on assumption that the pile rigidities are constant during the loa
