Abstract

. Current thought considers the need of eliminating all negative factors that affect environmental conditions in order to preserve the planet. This is the starting point for the study that the Department of Science and Nautical Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) is carrying out in Spanish ports. The idea is to discover any relationship between crew quality and the incidents produced. This paper presents definitive data about such a relationship obtained from research on accidents both out at sea and also near to the coast. It also provides preliminary data related to incidents inside Spanish ports. The UPC's study covers an analysis of crews on board ships involved in a series of accidents. From this analysis conclusions may be inferred according to the
