Abstract

This paper presents a new type of pile, i.e. the screw pile as an alternative to traditional piles on poor ground. The usage, the production and the principles of the calculation of screw piles are explained in the paper. A numerical example for application is provided at the end. Introduction It is a known fact that driving reinforced concrete piles into the ground can cause strong vibrations which may cause damage to surrounding constructions. Cracks resulting from these vibrations may in the worst cases necessitate the total reconstruction of the damaged buildings. This is particularly dangerous in the proximity of historical buildings. Screw pile foundations are a suitable alternative in such cases. A sketch of the screw pile can be seen in Fig. 1. The calculation principles of screw piles are explained in appendix A. The screw pile is driven into the ground just like a screw.
