Abstract

An F.E. model for the simulation of masonry panels subjected to earthquake actions V. Vratsanou Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG, Hauptniederlassung Baden-Wiirttemberg, Hohenzollernstrasse 22, 7500 Karlsruhe 1, Germany ABSTRACT A constitutive model for the simulation of the behaviour of brick masonry panels under plane stress conditions is presented. Masonry is treated as an ideal nonlinear homogeneous material. The model is based on the experimental results of Naraine/Sinha and Page. The numerical results from the analysis of masonry panels subjected to monotonic and cyclic actions are compared with experimental findings from the literature and a very good agreement is found. INTRODUCTION Masonry is a material which exhibits distinct directional properties due to the mortar joints which act as plane of weakness. The great number of influence factors, such as quality of bricks and mortar, dimensions of bricks, joint width, arrangement of bed and head joints,
