Abstract

This paper proposes a model of the kinematic vehicular behavior in proximity of a signa- lised intersection, of the relative emissions and atmospheric concentrations of polluting gases (CO, VOC, NOx) in different environmental conditions (open field or street canyon). Afterwards some strategies are suggested by the model application, to minimize the pol- luting emissions and their negative effects: the reduction of the cycle time, the signal coordi- nation and the relocation of the queues from narrow road segments to wide ones. 0 Introduction The atmospheric pollution caused by the vehicular traffic constitutes one of the most serious problems for the urban environment. Some models have been developed for the simulation of the emissions and of the atmospheric pollutant
