Abstract

Modelling and simulating earthquake accelerograms using strong motion data from the Istanbul, Turkey region K.L. Findell, H.U. Koyliioglu, A.S. Cakmak Department of Civil Engineering & Operation Research, Princeton University, Princeton NJ 08544, USA ABSTRACT In order to simulate earthquake ground motions for the Istanbul, Turkey region, acceleration time series from western Turkey are modelled by transforming the series into a stationary series which can be described by an autoregressive moving-average (ARM A) process. The ARM A parameters and the other parameters used in the stationary transfor- mation are related to physical parameters (e.g., magnitude, distance to epicenter, depth to hypocenter and duration) via a regression analysis. To create simulations for a given set of physical parameters, the modelling procedure is reversed. INTRODUCTION The ultimate goal of this research is to obtain simulations of earthquake ground motions for the Istanbul, Turkey region that ar
