Abstract

Preliminary study on site response modification B. Palazzo, L. Petti Institute of Civil Engineering, University of Salerno, Italy ABSTRACT This paper describes a preliminary study about the possibility of providing a seismic site response modification. The study considers SH waves vertically propagated under soil columns where artificial layers have been realized. The possibility of reducing the free field amplification functions in the frequency range of interest by means of multiple scattering effects produced by such artificial layers is discussed, varying the mechanical properties of the inclusions. INTRODUCTION The observation regarding seismic damage distribution caused by seismic events has shown that the seismic damage is spread irregularly throughout an area which has different geological conditions. Two recent events (Mexico 1985, Loma Prieta 1989) have confirmed the previous consideration: the seismic motion recorded on firm soil
