Abstract

Trends and achievements in the development of the European codes for earthquake resistant design E. Keintzel Institut fur Massivbau und Baustofftechnologie, Universitdt Karlsruhe, W-7500 Karlsruhe, Germany ABSTRACT A survey of the development of the European Seismic Codes is presented in the introduction, beginning with the first approaches in the 18th century. Comparisons are then made between design parameters taken from different European National Codes. Finally, some characteristic features of Eurocode 8 are outlined, which appear to provide guidance for future harmonization. INTRODUCTION The earliest European Codes for Earthquake Resistant Design date from the 18th century: after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake a series of rules for the reconstruction of the city had been imposed, but it was only after the 1783 Calabrian earthquake that the first code in the world for earthquake resistant design was issued.
