Abstract

An associated elasto-plastic liquefaction model A. Anandarajah Department of Civil Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, Maryland 21218, ABSTRACT An elasto-plastic constitutive model capable of describing the liquefac- tion behavior of granular materials under cyclic loading is presented. The model employs associated flow rule, but different procedures are employed in modeling the behavior during loading and stress reversal. The model is shown to simulate the laboratory liquefaction behavior of normally and overconsolidated sands satisfactorily. INTRODUCTION Liquefaction of sands has caused catastrophic failures of structures during earthquakes. In carrying out a boundary value problem, capturing realis- tically the pore pressure build-up and dissipation, an effective stress based mathematical model is required for describing the stress-strain behavior of the sand. Presented in this paper is a bounding surface type elasto-plastic model that is based
