Abstract

This paper deals with a problem where the member forces, induced by a given history of foundation settlement in a structure, can be calculated. A plastic hinge concept is adopted so that the relationship between foundation settlement and induced member forces can be traced until the structure cannot sustain any forces induced by settlement. The method proposed can also deal with settlement due to vertical, horizontal and rotational movements of the supports. This method is suitable for use in monitoring settlement of existing structures and pin-pointing the member sections where strengthening is needed. 1 Introduction Infrastructure maintenance is an area which is gaining increasing attention from engineers who are from time to time required to carry out assessment on the integrity of existing structures.
