Abstract

A study of some unsteady free surface problems in porous media F.H. Chaudhry, S.M.G.L. Montenegro Department of Hydraulics and Sanitary Engineering, Sao Carlos School of Engineering, University of Sao Paulo, 13.560 Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil ABSTRACT Various simple unsteady saturated flow configurations related to drawdown and recharge in a block of soil are employed to test the accuracy of the numerical solution of these transient flow prob- lems against experimental observations made on the corresponding Hele-Shaw model constructed for the purpose. Relative importance of procedural approximations involved in the application of bound- ary element method like time and boundary discretization, weighting factor for derivative approximation, coefficient matrix evaluation etc., is pointed out by comparing numerical and experimental re- sults. INTRODUCTION The usefulness of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solu- tion of the potential flow pro
