Abstract

Dynamic SSI investigation in the frequencydomain on a scaled steel frame by shaking table tests M. Maugeri & D. Novita Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Catania, Italy Abstract The dynamic behavior of structures is dependent from the nature of the supporting soil and, similarly, the behavior of the soil layer is modified by the presence of the structure. So, in consequence of soil-structure interaction (SSI), the fixed-base dynamic properties of the structures may be significantly modified by the presence of the underlying soil in terms of period of vibration and effective damping and again in terms of accelerations, displacements and mode shapes. The paper focuses on SSI in the seismic response of structures and to this aim, firstly, the seismic provisions of the European and American seismic codes and the numerical solution proposed by Wolf in terms of the dynamic response of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator, have been discussed. Secondly, the expe
