Abstract

In this paper we propose a numerical algorithm for solving a free boundary pro- blem with nonlocal constraint on the main unknown which arises as a mathe- matical model in elastohydrodynamic lubrication. The constraint is due to the natural balance between a given load imposed on a ball bearing device and the hydrodynamic load coming from the fluid that lubricates the contact. Elasticity, lubrication, viscosity and cavitation are the underlying phenomena which give place to a non linear coupled system of equations. We use fixed point sequences, method of characteristics, finite elements, duality techniques and monotonicity arguments to build up a numerical scheme. Numerical results for real data are shown. 1 Introduction In industrial machine elements the acting forces in the contacts between s
