Abstract

Research and development in engineering has provided powerful analytical and computational tools which have revolutionised the design of engineering systems, their testing and the manufacturing of products. However, engineering cannot be described by numerical models and algorithms only, it involves reasoning, knowledge, heuristics and other factors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is now emerging and promises to provide the same level of success as the analytical models have had. In this paper, we look at how AI can be applied in safety engineering, from the requirements through design to the development stage with emphasis on the requirements stage. 1 Introduction The recent accidents in Piper Alpha, Chernobyl, Bhopal, Mexico city etc. increased the public awareness of the health and environm
