Abstract

This paper describes how cam design can be recast into a Knowledge Base system and used as a support tool for cam designers both novice and experienced alike. Methods of representing cam design knowledge acquired from literature, texts and experts using Artificial Intelligence techniques is described. LPA Win PROLOG Ver 3.0 was used as a vehicle to drive the system. 1 Introduction In engineering design the designer is usually confronted by the conflicting constraints of limited design time and good quality technical solutions. An expert designer can be considered to be someone who can work within this conflict, whilst an inexperienced designer usually can’t.
