Abstract

An Object Oriented (OO) model of materials degradation was developed to facilitate the transfer of aircraft inspection expertise during the construction of a Knowledge Based System (KBS) designed to support decisions at the field level. In this paper, a study of the failures of aircraft landing gear components was used to establish the key elements required of a practical KBS and establish guidelines for knowledge acquisition. 1 Introduction The seriousness of the effects materials degradation, and particularly corrosion, have on the structural integrity of aging aircraft is well documented. Due to increasing budget constraints, Air Forces and commercial airlines around the world are operating their aircraft for ever longer periods of time, often much past the initial design lif
